There is a quiet peacefulness that settles in during twilight on the beach.

At the Outer Banks in North Carolina the sun sets on the IntraCoastal Waterway to the West, and the skies above the Atlantic to the East take on an ephemeral glow. The Outer Banks coastline is unique beauty, twisting and turning in the ageless winds and waters. If you’re lucky enough to visit during a full moon the magic is multiplied in the bright glow of the heaven’s lunar face.

Sea Turtles

Sea turtles nest along these banks and dig their way to the surface at the beckoning call of the full moon’s high tide in the Fall. Rescue workers hold them at bay in plastic tubs until the skies fall dark and birds of prey are no longer flying the skies in search of a snack. When the turtles are released they instinctively make their way to the waters and push against the tides that throw them back onto the beach relentlessly. They are persistent and determined and no amount of tumultuous, salty waters can keep them off their path. Eventually they make it into the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and journey South.

Some of my favorite spots include Corolla, Manteo, Nag’s Head, Rodanthe, Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke. I am also a fan of many spots on the mainland including Beaufort, Elizabeth City and Wilmington. For a little spiritual rejuvenation I highly recommend a journey to the North Carolina Coast North Carolina Coast.
